Sedlmayer's mention by Bing Crosby In the song Moonlight Bay, released in 1951, Bing introduces his son Gary as having been "flown in at great expense from Sedlmayer's Milk Bar".
A Sedlmayer's regular from that era informed us that the milk bar part was a comedic reference to the fact that Ed Sedlmayer kept the milk cool on ice under the bar with the beers.
Start at Begining Sedlmayer's Mention

It's been another busy year. We got a dog (as you can see in the picture), the girls named her Piper. We lost our camp hostess due to illness. We found another; then lost him. Finally an excellent solution landed in our laps. A couple who are regular campers here asked if they could to do it. I invited them to do a trial and finish the year out for us.

Wow! That was crazy! We hadn't anticipated this summer would be quite so crazy. I had entered all the daily numbers from last year into a spreadsheet so that I could graph them and compare them to this year. I found that we had a sudden, and sizable, drop in business at the end of last July that we never bounced back from. After talking to several locals, it seems that the smoke arrived right about that time.

It rained all of May and most of June, that made getting the park ready for the season quite tricky. The picnic tables needed repainting. …I know, don't paint picnic tables! Unfortunately someone already had and it's peeling off, so they were going to get a fresh coat, and some site numbers. Sadly it never stopped raining long enough for the exposed wood to dry out before it got too busy to paint them.

New Lights for the Deck

The deck received some new lights this week. The ugly old spot lights either side of the sign are gone, replaced by a couple of much nicer looking fittings. They match the goose neck lights over the sign pretty well. Hopefully the 60W LED bulbs I put in are enough, I may have to step up to a higher wattage. I've also made some changes to the way I post my diary entries.

This week I built the new counter for the store. We removed the display case and temporary counter, and I built a nice big one with space for your legs, and shelves for the computer and printers, and places for the other equipment we need to keep handy. I still have to build a matching small section to go against the wall, but I'm pleased with the outcome of this part.

The store has finally received a much needed re-organising. I rearranged the store and finally got the shelves secured into the unit that was originally going to be a wardrobe in our house; that never happened because a tree fell on the house before the wardrobe was completed. I need some more wood to make the last four shelves, but with all the rain/snow I was unable to use my trailer because it had no fenders (wheel arches) and sprayed water and mud over everything.

Camping among the cedars One of the many great features of the Sedlmayer's Resort campground is its many cedar trees providing shade and beauty for the campers. We also have the lawn and beach from which our campers can enjoy the lake. Every site has 20, 30 & 50 amp electrical service, however only sites 1 through 21 have sewer. If you prefer pull-through sites you'll want one of #14 through #19, or #21.

This Christmas was a lot of fun. We opted not to open on Christmas day, so decided to offer Prime Rib for Christmas Eve. This turned out to be popular, and the whole family ended up working in the restaurant. Christmas day we had planned on hiding out in the apartment eating chocolate and playing games, but we ended up doing all kinds of things such as helping pull a snowplough out of a snow bank, filling propane, delivering a grazing board and shoveling snow.

Busy, busy, busy! Wow! We never expected the restaurant to be so busy so quickly, …we were so busy this summer I never got to making a new diary entry, although I started a couple of times. Even with summer well and truly over we're still hard at it. With the restaurant and RV park having quieted down for winter I've had time to make some further improvements to the restaurant; including several public things such as faucets in the restrooms that you can get your hands under.

We're soft open! We opened the restaurant/bar doors for the first time Friday evening. Friday evening was busy! Saturday was kind of slow and Sunday, Mother's Day, was just about right. We received a lot of positive and constructive feedback and many compliments throughout the weekend. As expected not everything went smoothly, the grill caught fire and the control knobs all fell off because the plastic inside them started melting.

Some amazing friends have been going all out with helping us get ready. What was the ugly ladies toilet has been redecorated and is now beautiful. I know, I should have a picture of it, but it's not quite ready yet! When it's finished I'll do a new post with a picture. When we re-open, the toilets will be unisex, so anyone can use either. This will circumvent the issue of the men's toilet not being disabled accessible, the mop sink is in the way.

We found a fantastic chef for the restaurant! The first chef we had lined up sadly had to pull out due to an ongoing knee injury that wasn't getting better as hoped. However, that has worked out OK for us as we then discovered a guy who lives only a few minutes away who has many years of experience working in and running commercial kitchens. He's as excited about opening the restaurant as we are!

After a relaxed, low-key celebration of the end of 2020 in the apartment, we stepped things up and really got the restaurant revamp underway. Mandi's aunt and a good friend of hers came over this morning to start painting in the bar. They're very efficient ladies; it didn't take them long to have the red paint covered with a more subtle grey ...or taupe, green, brown or blue depending on who you ask and where they're standing at the time.

Given that we have a restaurant at our disposal we decided to make use of it. We arranged a couple of the new pews and some tables, setup a stereo to play the Christmas music, erected the Christmas tree that we found in the basement of the Big House, and finally strung up some lights. Cat from the Linger Longer tavern provided us some of her excellent pizza's, which we had fun cooking in the pizza ovens, and Mandi found some Christmas crackers left over from last year.

Helping Dad With the Security Cameras

When my dad asked me to help him with the security cameras I was so exited! It would be like I was one of the people in the book I was reading at the time, sitting in front of the screen watching for thieves. It wasn’t as interesting as I’d anticipated. He handed me a walky-talky and walked to the first camera, leaving me in his office waiting for him to OK my unplugging of some wires until he told me I’d unplugged the right one, then I waited for what the camera was recording to appear on the screen and move onto the next one.

The first month and a bit have been hectic with transferring services, refurbishing the "Big House" (the girl's name for the Lake House), and trying to figure out everything we need to do. Rob has been very understanding and gone out of his way to help us in the transition. …some of the services have not been easy to transfer. Thank-you again Rob. Last week Mandi spotted some used 12' church pews for $10 a piece.

When you find a mysterious little white, plastic box on the windowsill, that looks a little like a door bell but with no button you wonder what it's for. You can see a battery inside. What is it? Lets open it up and look for clues. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP,.... goes the security alarm as soon as I have it open. Hmm, I guess it's some kind of security sensor.
